Understanding Cellular Tower Pings
Every cell tower has specific sectors pointing in distinct directions (usually 3 sectors of 120 degrees each). By analyzing which sector routed a connection and measuring the "timing advance" (distance from the tower), an examiner can narrow a device's location down to a specific sector range.
Combining Mobile Data with CDRs
The most robust timelines combine phone-internal GPS logs with carrier CDR logs. When both datasets align, they provide a highly credible, mathematically verifiable map of device movements.
